When Ruibai Dong was just a kid, he was discovered by a then-middle-aged Rick Wu. As a technomancer, Ruibai should have been ostracized and even sold to one of the megacorps for a profit. But instead, Rick decided to take a chance on the young boy.
This, as it turns out, is one of the best decisions Rick Wu has ever made. Ruibai blossomed to become a very powerful technomancer, and rose through the ranks of the Eighty Eights with the same respect and hard work that anyone else had to use.
When Rick Wu offered to make Ruibai the Incense Master for the Eighty Eights, Ruibai was dubious at first. What would he be able to do as an Incense Master without magical ability? But Ruibai delved deep into the Resonance and emerged with special variants of the basic initiation rituals and oaths.
Since then, Ruibai has been an extremely effective Incense Master, and his modified rituals have continued to function in much the same fashion as their magical counterparts. However, if someone violates their oaths the offender ceases to exist.
Instead of a bloody and violent end, the offender’s existence is wiped from the Matrix. All of their assets are destroyed, all of the things they own reject their rightful owner, and police records turn up implicating the offender in some sort of horrible criminal activity that lands the offender in a dark hole. No one believes the offender’s stories, and they end up quickly going insane.
